In 1978, while in New York and working in the night club "Cachaça" with my trio (Claudio Guimarães(electric bass) Duduca Fonseca (drums) and crooner Clarice Taylor, (we had also a small demonstration of Capoeira in the middle of the sets, with Jelon and Loremil), doing 3 one hour sets per night, 6 nights per week, I started to think that I should start to take a different turn in my career, recording a L.P. with my compositions and arrangements. I thought: "to became a real artist, one must have an L.P. recorded.". With the help of two friends, James Mason (guitar) and Phil Clandermin (pianist and sound engineer) that took account of the former studio of the Audio Fidelity on Blecker St. and had a group (totally funk) and called me to do some solos (and some accompaniments) on the L.P. of James Mason (the only one recorded by them, then they disappeared completely, never heard about them anymore and the L.P. is nowadays considered "super cult") I got in exchange for my participation in their L.P. , rehearsals, etc. ... studio time to record my L.P. in their studio. The "adventure" begun. i wrote 4 songs and arrangements, and besides the trio, I invited Léa Freire (flute), Paulo Guimarães (flute), Naná Vasconcelos (percussion) and José Neto (guitar) and recorded 4 tracks. Then, everything stopped. James and Phil dispersed, and the studio closed. I have stored those 4 tracks at home. When I returned to Brazil in 1980, I started to finish the L.P., and called Sisão Machado (electric bass), Amado Maita (drums) Léa Freire (who played the two flutes), Marcelo Munari (guitar) and singer Silvia Maria, and recorded 3 tracks more and completed the L.P. And how to fin a record company to release it? None wanted, thought that the music was "anti-commercial". Then I discovered the "Independent Music Distribution", a company that Cesare Benvenutti had just founded to distribute L.Ps labeled as "anti-commercial". It was the birth of Independent movement in Brazil. There were (among other artists) Antonio Adolfo and the group "Boca Livre" (the first independent group to sell hundred of thousands os L.P.s). I had a great acceptance by the media and made memorable shows at Theaters in São Paulo, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, sold more than 1,500 copies of these records in those shows, and to friends, and could pay for the pressing of the LPs and make some money for myself and pay my colleagues. After the closing of the "Independent Music Distribution" (the "majors" destroyed that company with their subtle ways), the L.Pl has never been re-edited, and only in 2001 a staff of English Whatmusic Record Company, considered me a "cult artist", and released my "Naturalmente" L.P. (the first release of their company), in Vinyl and CD, to the European, American and Japanese audiences. I am very happy that my first album is still "alive" and playing around, the world. Now I am looking for resources to do a reissue of this CD to make available for sale via Internet for those interested . By the way, the Whatmusic (English recording company) closed. Below, two tracks of that album, "A Sangue Quente" (Inner fire tap) recorded in New York and "O Canto dos Elefantes" (The Elephants Chant), recorded in Sao Paulo. I hope you enjoy.
